BBC Sport reports Bournemouth would sell the England midfielder in January for £100m, but only if they are not near the bottom of the Premier League, with Chelsea and Liverpool said to be leading the race.

A Tottenham season ticket holder has begun supporting Bournemouth, on the strength of a single conditional clause in a BBC Sport report.

The man, who arrived at the stadium forecourt on a non-match day with no match to attend, was wearing a Cherries scarf by mid-morning. The Herald understands it was borrowed.

BBC Sport reports that Bournemouth, having rejected all enquiries for Alex Scott in the summer, are now open to selling him in January for £100m. The sale is conditional on the club not sitting towards the bottom of the Premier League, in which case they could decide to keep him to aid survival.

The man has read the second half of that sentence several times and reached a firm conclusion.

They need to be mid-table. Not too high, mind, or they'll want more. Just comfortable. I'm doing what I can.

Our correspondent observed him for forty minutes. In that time he addressed the railings on the subject of Bournemouth's goal difference, and checked a phone for the Cherries' result, which was not scheduled.

He was aware that Chelsea and Liverpool are reported to be leading the race, and that Alex Scott is a boyhood Spurs fan, a fact he described as well known and quite important. He did not explain how the two points combine with the scarf.

At press time he had tied the scarf to the railings, and was standing beside it.
