Spurs Web reports Tottenham have risen one place to 23rd in Opta's global power rankings despite being winless in six Premier League matches, with a rating of 91.5.

A Tottenham season ticket holder has climbed one rung of a borrowed stepladder outside the stadium, in recognition of Opta's decision to lift the club from 24th to 23rd in its global power rankings.

The movement was reported by Spurs Web, which has been monitoring the club's placings over recent months and noted that Spurs began the campaign 30th, rose six places once the transfer window closed, and have now added a seventh.

The man arrived at the forecourt at approximately 9:15am on a day with no match, carrying the ladder under one arm and a flask under the other. He placed the feet on level paving, tested it twice, and ascended.

Twenty-third in the world. I'm on the first rung and I'm not coming down until somebody tells me why I should.

The rise comes despite a league record of three draws and three defeats, three goals scored, and a position of 19th in the Premier League table, all of which the man was able to recite from memory and then set aside.

Opta rates the club at 91.5, a figure he has written on the back of his hand in biro and checks at intervals. Asked what it meant, he said it was "a lot", and confirmed he was not prepared to go lower.

The ladder has eleven rungs. The man has said he will attempt the second if the next rankings update goes the same way, and is understood to be taking advice from the neighbour who owns it.

He has been asked twice to step down by a steward, who then went back inside.
