Supporter Separates Two Bins Forty Yards After Neville Says Tielemans And Mainoo Must Not Play Together
Desmond Parry · Chief Football Correspondent · Reading time: one pint
Gary Neville said on his podcast that Manchester United's midfield pairing of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo is not dynamic enough for the Premier League, following Saturday's draw with Spurs, and the stadium forecourt was otherwise empty.
A Tottenham man spent Sunday morning on the forecourt of the stadium moving two wheelie bins apart, after hearing that Gary Neville had seen enough of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo playing together for Manchester United.
Mr Neville made the remark on his podcast following Saturday night's draw, in which Spurs midfielders Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher were reported to have overrun the pairing. Mr Neville also said he was not calling time on it, which the Herald understands was not heard by everyone.
The bins had stood eleven feet apart since the previous home fixture. By ten past nine they stood forty yards apart, with a tape measure laid between them and a flask placed at the halfway point as a neutral.
He said they don't knit together. You can see it straight away. Look at them. Nobody could say those two bins knit.
Our correspondent observed that the bins are not Premier League midfielders, have never been used in the same system, and are emptied on alternate Thursdays by the council. The man confirmed that he was aware of all this, and said it was not the point.
At approximately 10:30am he moved the left-hand bin a further yard, citing the fact that Manchester United face Atletico Madrid, Como and Leeds in the coming weeks and that, in his words, "somebody has to get a grip". A steward who arrived to collect a delivery asked whether either bin could be moved back.
At the time of going to press the bins were being rested, and the supporter was monitoring the situation from the bench.
