Tutto Sport has reported that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both keen on Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi, who has scored nine goals this season, and the Herald has traced the claim through five websites to a single Italian paragraph.
A Tottenham man at a kitchen table in North London has read the same report about Nicolo Tresoldi five times since 7.40am, and has been assured by each site that it is a different one.
The original appeared in Tutto Sport, an Italian publication, which reported that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both keen on the Club Brugge forward. It is the only place in the chain where anyone claims to have heard anything.
The first English website repeated the claim at its natural size, adding that Tresoldi has scored nine goals this season, including a hat-trick away at Inter Milan in the Champions League. These figures were also in the original.
By the second website Spurs were monitoring the player. By the third they were locked in a straight fight with Arsenal. By the fifth, according to the Herald's reading, the matter had become a race, though no one has yet been named as having started it.
It's the same story. It's just got louder. I've had four slices of toast and it's got louder every slice.
The Herald has established that the only new material to enter the story since breakfast began is a Transfermarkt valuation of £30 million, which appeared in the second paragraph of every version and has not moved.
One site added that the 22-year-old's stock "may rise significantly by next summer". A second site, reading the first, reported that his stock has risen significantly. Tresoldi's price remains £30 million.
The man has now closed the fifth website and opened a sixth.
