Williams-Barnett Story Arrives At Breakfast Via Four Websites As A Five Club Race With Nothing Added
Philippa Crane · Media Editor · Reading time: one pint
Sky reports that Dortmund and Bayern are interested in Tottenham's 18-year-old attacking midfielder Williams-Barnett, who is under contract until 2028, and that Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are understood to be monitoring him.
A Tottenham man at a kitchen table has read the same report about Spurs youngster Williams-Barnett four times since seven o'clock, and says it has become more urgent each time without becoming any longer.
The original item, attributed to Sky, states that Dortmund have identified the 18-year-old attacking midfielder as a potential addition and that Bayern are also interested. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are understood to be monitoring him.
The Herald has traced the wording through each stage. At the first outlet, Dortmund and Bayern were interested. At the second, they had joined a race. At the third, Tottenham faced significant competition. By the fourth, the whole matter had become a five-club scramble, a phrase that appears in none of the preceding three.
It's on every website now. Every one. That's how you know it's serious.
The facts themselves survived the journey intact. Every outlet repeated that Williams-Barnett is contracted until 2028, made his debut in September 2025 and has made one further first-team appearance since. The figures of 37 goal contributions in 32 Under-18 games and 15 in 12 for the Under-21s were also reproduced faithfully, which the Herald regards as the only part of the process conducted with care.
The Herald can confirm that nothing new was added at any point. No fresh quote, no additional source, and no club beyond the five already named in the Sky report. The article on the fourth website is, in every respect except its adjectives, the article on the first.
The man has nonetheless opened a fifth website to see how the matter is faring there. His tea went cold at about the second.
The toast is untouched.
