Column Says Spurs Home Form Is Not The Stadium's Fault And Supporter Apologises To Turnstile Four
Desmond Parry · Chief Football Correspondent · Reading time: one pint
A column published on 10 October argues that Tottenham's home form, with the club bottom of the Premier League and winless, has nothing to do with the stadium, which saw 12 home wins in its first full season, 2019-20, and has not responded.
A Tottenham man spent Saturday morning outside the stadium apologising to it, after reading a column that found the building not to blame for the club sitting bottom of the Premier League.
The Herald understands that since August he had attributed the winless start to the pitch, the acoustics, the angle of the roof and "something about the seats".
The column, published during the international break, notes that the stadium's first full season produced 12 home wins and that Ange Postecoglou's first season produced 13. The man read these figures at 7:40am and left the house without his coat.
I said it was the stadium. It's not the stadium. It's never been the stadium. I've come to say that to its face.
He addressed turnstile four, which was closed, for eleven minutes. The stadium offered no reply, which the man described as fair enough.
The column concludes that things need to change drastically, none of which have anything to do with the stadium. The man has underlined this sentence twice in pen and is now looking for something else to apologise to.
By mid-afternoon he had ruled out the roof and the concourse, and was last seen walking slowly toward the car park.
I'm not saying I was wrong about the roof. I'm saying the roof has been very patient.
The turnstile remains closed.
