Maddison Answer To Carragher On Keane Is Read Over Cereal Four Times And Laugh Becomes Backtrack
Philippa Crane · Media Editor · Reading time: one pint
Jamie Carragher asked James Maddison on Sky Sports after Tottenham's 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday who his favourite pundit was, and the reply, one laugh and two compliments, has since been reported by a household four times with nothing added.
A Tottenham household has now read the same exchange between James Maddison and Jamie Carragher four times since a quarter past seven, and can report that it has been, in turn, a laugh, a confrontation, a backtrack and a talking point, while remaining a single question and a single answer throughout.
The original item concerns a Sky Sports interview after Tottenham's 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday. Carragher asked Maddison who his favourite pundit was. Maddison said Roy Keane was his favourite to watch, and that Carragher's analysis was the best.
The first version, taken with cereal, described a hilarious confrontation. The second, taken with toast, had the midfielder backtracking. By the third, the Herald understands, the word had acquired a second adjective, and by the fourth it had begun to sound like a development.
It's a different headline every time but it's the same man saying the same two nice things. I've checked. I've had a pen out.
Each version carried the same paragraph of background on Keane's remarks in February 2025, placed at the same point in the same order. The household notes that this paragraph has not changed either, and has been read four times with increasing respect.
By twenty to nine the tally on the back of an envelope stood at four sites, one interview, one answer and no new facts. A fifth reading was proposed and carried on the grounds that the kettle had not yet boiled.
The next fixture, Chelsea away on Saturday, appeared in all four versions and was the only detail to survive unaltered.
If you watch the full thing it's obvious. Nobody watches the full thing.
